So is happiness really a career change away for you?
I’m not sure but I know how to figure it out. So the real thing is you need to know what makes you happy and here is where you need to look. First look at your accomplishments, times in your life where you really had a sense that you accomplished something that you really felt a sense of satisfaction from the results of doing something, almost like “pinch me” moments, like it’s so great you go, “Pinch me. I wanna make sure I’m not dreaming.” And then look at those accomplishments and take them apart. Look at the skills that you use and figure out why it gave you a real sense of satisfaction because that’s what you need to duplicate in your career or a job to have part of that happiness component show up.
Here’s the other thing you need to look at, what are your values? What are those key things that are important to you? Value words or things like honesty, integrity, wealth, romance, happiness, contribution to society, helping others. Whatever those are for you, you need to figure out what they are because any organization that you work in cannot conflict with your own values. For example, if you love to volunteer in the community a lot, a job where you have to work 60 or 70 hours a week and then sends you out of town on no notice may not be the right fit for you because you won’t be able to get that volunteering in which is the key component of your value system. So you need to make sure that your values can coexist with the values of any organization you might be working in.
So when you can now find a career and look at it, where it aligns with what gives you a real sense of accomplishments or you’re gonna jump out of bed every morning motivated to go do it and it also aligns with your values, so those things are really important to you, you get satisfied, that’s the recipe for real career success. Those are some of the key components you need to look at and then when you’ve got that figured out the, “Yes.” You know what? Happiness can be your career change away.
